How Many Jewelry Making Techniques Are There?

How many jewelry making techniques are there? How much time do you have? As many moments as you have beads? Not if you’re like me!

There are many jewelry-making techniques, and some don’t even have to involve beads!

Firstly, I tell my jewelry-making students that they shouldn’t call themselves “beaders” because they may decide to work in different ways using alternative materials. Secondly, they may also create new methods and mediums for future handmade artisans to delve into. And lastly, you can see from my list below that there are many options to pique design interest and build artistic skills without limits.

As our art mediums expand with the progression of skills, so do the various techniques used to make jewelry. Here are several jewelry-making techniques, but certainly not all.

A Plethora of Parts Used in Jewelry Design

It’s worth mentioning that you can be a jewelry designer even if using mixed media, resin, polymer clay, air-dry clay, paper, wood, fossils, bone, and more! The awesome part of jewelry making is that we are not limited as artists, but only by our lack of skills and passion. If you’re always learning and eager to grow, your art will flourish as you move forward in your handmade ventures.

For those who believe hobbyists are not serious artists, I beg to differ. We all start out as hobbyists. It is through our curiosity and our determination to succeed that we expand into the type of artist we wish to be. There should not be any shame for basic bead stringers vs. metal smithers, or fine jewelry designers vs. Czech glass beaders. We are all passionate about creating. We should all rejoice that we still have the energy to create things, especially in today’s world.

For my friends who say that they are not creative enough to make jewelry, I disagree. You’ve got old spoons, don’t you? They can make lovely garden ornaments, kitchen decor, pendants for necklaces, etc. You never know what you might find inspiration in, so don’t limit yourself and always support those who put themselves out there in the artistic world! I have found that even an accountant can be creative…in the colors they choose as headers on their spreadsheets. (I know what you were thinking. Wink. Wink).

I’ve been enjoying the GenX crowd on social media bringing back fun from the 80’s. If you are a fellow GenXer and love the crazy fashion vibes that are trending again, I’ve got a Throwback Thursday for Crafters: Twist-a-Beads post that may interest you.
